Editing is about helping you become the best author you can be, assisting you in every step on your journey to publication.
I offer manuscript assessments, developmental edits, copy edits and proofreads for both fiction and non-fiction, for manuscripts of all lengths and genres/subjects.
For a manuscript assessment, I read through the manuscript in full and then write a report.
For a developmental edit, I read through the manuscript and leave comments to point out areas where I feel the manuscript needs work and then write a report when I’ve read the whole thing.
For a copy edit, I read through the manuscript, using MS Word’s tracked changes feature to make some changes and adjustments that I feel will improve your manuscript. Because I use tracked changes, you can review every change I make and decide whether or not you feel it’s of benefit to your manuscript. I will also leave comments throughout the document and then will write a report detailing any changes and adjustments I am recommending.
For a proofread, I use tracked changes to point out spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and punctuation problems. I may leave comments at various places if I feel it’s necessary to explain the changes I’ve made.
You can go to the contact page on this website or email me at lynnestringerauthor@gmail.com
You can see my rates on my pricing page. The cost of manuscript assessments are based on word count. I can quote a developmental edit, copy edit or proofread once I see the manuscript and assess it, so I can estimate how much time it will take me to complete.
Yes. I can do a free sample edit of one page of your manuscript.
It depends on the size of the manuscript and the editing required. I try to ensure all edits are done within four weeks. Manuscript assessments may be completed much more quickly. However, copy edits on long manuscripts may take longer. I am happy to discuss this with you when you submit your manuscript and discuss a particular timeframe if you have specific requirements.
Yes, I do. I have edited both fiction and non-fiction for many years and am happy to quote on either.
I began editing non-fiction in 1998 when I took on the job of editor of a small periodical, which I did for seven years. I continued editing non-fiction sporadically after 2005, taking it up more regularly in 2011, when I began working for Wombat/Rhiza. I also started editing fiction at this time. Since then, I have edited dozens of manuscripts of both fiction and non-fiction.
I consider it imperative as part of my role that I honour client confidentiality. At no time do I discuss or share details of my clients’ work without permission to do so. I am happy to sign an NDA if you have one.
I value return clients and I offer a discount to any author who refers another author to me. If you refer a fellow author and they sign up to let me do a copy edit on their manuscript, I will give you 10% off your next edit. This increases for every person you refer who signs up. So if you refer three authors to me and two of them agree to let me do a copy edit on their manuscript, you will get 20% off your next edit of any kind.
I have done all genres of fiction and have a particular interest in speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, paranormal, etc), young adult, historical, contemporary and romance. However, if you have a manuscript with a great deal of violence or sex, I may not be able to edit it.
Yes, I can help with this in both the developmental and copy-edit phases. If you feel you have a specific requirement for this, it may be of benefit to have a developmental edit first to deal with those issues specifically.
I will edit any story of any length.
I always try and stay true to your author voice. However, I will suggest changes if I feel that the way you have written your story affects the narrative and pace of your story. Of course, everything I suggest is a suggestion only and you’re free to take the elements of my advice that you want to use and reject what you feel isn’t right for you.
Yes, I will do this by providing you with a report that will detail the places where I feel this is an issue. I may also leave a comment in the manuscript to point it out, depending on the kind of edit you have asked for.
Yes, I can, and I have helped other clients with this. This is something that can be addressed specifically in a developmental edit but I can also do it in a copy edit.
All types. However, if you need someone who can comment on the specifics of your subject, my ability to do so may be limited. For example, if you submit a manuscript on the maintenance of air conditioners, I may not be able to tell if you’re explaining the subject in the best way because I have no experience with maintaining air conditioners.
I haven’t done a great deal of this and may not be able to provide all the nuances required. However, if you need help to make sure that you’re communicating in the best possible way, I can definitely help.
Yes, I can. I have done many of them.
I ensure they follow the style you want to use and I check any URLs to make sure they function.
Yes, I can. I can help you figure out the best order for the information and the most logical flow.
Yes, I can, and have done many.
I can use whichever style you would like for your book.
My prices are charged per round. If I am editing your manuscript, I will read through it and return it to you. I am happy to have a 20-minute Zoom/phone call to discuss it if you like, but if you want me to look at the manuscript again, I will need to quote on it again, as that will require an additional fee.
I use Microsoft Word with the tracked changes tool engaged so that every change I make is tracked.
I have a testimonial page on my website that has testimonials from previous clients.
I usually do a few workshops or seminars a year. Check out my events page to see what’s coming up. If you would like specific coaching, I am more than happy to have a conversation with you about the best way forward.
Yes, I have been a published author since 2013, mainly in the young adult science fiction genre. You can check out my novels on my books page on this website.
