Lynne Stringer – Author & Editor

August was a wonderful month in my family, as my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, David and Kylie Knight of Knight Illusions, were visiting from America. We usually only get to see them once every three years or so, and to have them in Australia for a full month was a delight.

They staged three different shows while they were here and we were able to attend their first one. It’s always fun to see what new tricks they have prepared (and no, they don’t tell me how they’re done!) and they had some good ones this time. If you’re in America and you like magic, make sure you check them out. 🙂

It was also nice to talk shop with them behind the scenes, comparing notes on the pros and cons of the world of magic and the world of writing. There are definitely major challenges in each that can bring about a lot of frustration but the rewards are also great. Like most of us creatives, it’s a constant tension between getting the word out about what you do and trying to make it a viable business.

I find it interesting that there are so many creatives in our family, especially ones who try to support ourselves by means of our creativity. While both my husband’s family and mine have long had a creative streak, prior to this generation they still had ‘normal’ jobs as well. However, I’m a writer, my husband’s a photographer, and his sister and her husband are magicians.

I guess creativity is in the family. It can make for fascinating conversation when we all get together. 🙂
